Most dentists know that oral health does not only solve the patient’s problem and/or improve their smile. Oral Health is more than that!
Old dental issues often are the cause of distress instead of wellbeing. Poorly treated teeth can cause chronic inflammation, fatigue, stress, joint pain, migraines, infections, and other general health problems. Attending these problems requires a trained Doctor from a specific field to treat them through advanced technology and quality. The goal is to optimize the overall health and wellbeing of the patient.
The mouth connects to the body. When patients mention they have any issues with their general health, this particular field will look through this point of view to provide better oral health and optimize it following standards protocols.
Today we will talk about biological dentistry, sustainable and green dentistry, and why Photobiomodulation is an invaluable addition to this field.

What is Biological Dentistry and sustainable green dentistry?
When talking about patient’s health care, biological Dentistry plays a vital role because it takes care of the overall human health based on the understating that prevention and optimization of overall health are crucial factors to attend to our patients’ mouth. It is not a separate, recognized, specialty of dentistry.
It combines various dentistry areas with the holistic component of general medicine. Everything is connected.
The principles of Biological Dentistry are:
– Use of the most 100% biocompatible and biological materials
– Removal of amalgams following a science- based protocol for greatly reducing and minimizing mercury exposure during amalgam removal, with specific equipment’s such as, specific air purifier, FFP3 masks, protective rubber cloth, and others. This specific protocol and equipment’s, ensures that nothing is aspirated through the airways or eyes, ensuring that mercury does not enter your body.
– Verification of all root canals. If they are not 100% intact, the replacement of teeth by zirconium/ceramic implants is part of the protocol. It works to examine how those bacterial and fungal organisms can turn anaerobic and produce highly toxic waste products that diffuse out of the tooth, through the cementum, and into circulation. 3,1
– Elimination of cavitation zones resulting from poorly healed extractions. 1
Sustainable and Green Dentistry is a high-tech approach that:
- Reduces the environmental impact of dental practices taking into consideration sustainable measures in all sense. It promotes a responsible dentistry for the environment.
- Takes into consideration the environmental effects of biomaterials (before, during, and after clinical use).
- Seeks to find solutions in the generation of hazardous waste from a sustainable concept.
- It also protects human health and environmental impact, for example, from the mercury vapors released when working on the amalgam removal procedure and through the dental chair by hindering the mercury from ending up in the water.
- It supports the use of eco-friendly products, well-integrated with environmental and human health.
- It believes and promote the wellbeing concept of the whole dental space involving the environment.
It is an awareness that Dentists make to develop their practices from a “toxic” and “hazardous” to a “sustainable and healthy one.” In conclusion, Biological, and Sustainable Green Dentistry are both well connected, for the health of ALL.

What is Photobiomodulation?
In the past years, modern science found specific wavelengths of light that can directly penetrate our cells and allow them to perform more efficiently and effectively. 2
This technological advancement has mainly been used in specialized clinical settings to aid in wound healing, pain relief, and many more subjects.3
Recent developments in light technology allowed for a more comfortable and safer way of application through the switch from cold lasers to high-end cold LEDs as the method of action. This method is called Photobiomodulation and has led to more studies in the last years and real-world application becoming a reality. 4
Nowadays, this technology is still used in a very niche-based target group, e.g., by pro-athletes to up their recovery rate; biohackers that want to enhance their biology, beauty gurus that try to up their collagen levels, or longevity enthusiasts that want their cells to stay young. 5
Not only does this good light cue our internal clock, lack of sunlight is unhealthy. Studies show a correlation between obesity, weak bones, foot deformities, cancer, depression, skin problems, weight gain, cognitive issues, and a lack of sunshine.
Photobiomodulation uses certain parts of sunlight in the spectrum of 600-900nm (red and near-infrared light). Research shows that this spectrum helps us with optimal health/performance. 6
Red light (RL) is a superficial light wavelength (2mm deep) and can support skin health, hair growth, and circulation.
Near-infrared light (NIR) penetrates deep tissue (4mm deep). Near-infrared light is excellent for anti-aging, pain/inflammation, muscle recovery, energy, mood, and hormonal health (sleep, testosterone). This bandwidth of wavelengths is incredibly powerful, as it doesn’t only penetrate the skin but reaches into our cells and alters their function.
Specifically, with Photobiomodulation, our mitochondria (also called the powerhouses of the cells) get targeted. Mitochondria are located inside our cells and take in glucose and oxygen from the food we consume daily. They produce energy, packaged as molecules of so-called ATP (adenosine triphosphate). Photobiomodulation boosts this natural effect by enabling the mitochondria to produce more ATP. You can see this as supercharging yourself to function even better. Mitochondrial health is essential because, as we age, our mitochondrial function declines. Often, basic correlations impact us in the most significant way, our health and wellbeing being no exception. 7
And fun fact: there are no adverse effects with this cold light (unlike the sun). There’s no too much of this kind of light!
Today there are more than 4000 studies on the topic which prove the diverse therapeutic effects. 7 Companies on the market produce red light therapy devices for at-home use, which is an excellent addition to daily sunlight exposure. So far, this technology has only been available at high costs, and a lot of expertise was necessary to operate such machines. High resources often mean higher prices and expertise on the proper usage. We here at Luminousred strive to make this technology available to the mainstream bigger audience. Let’s boost your natural functions on a heightened level!
What do PBM and biological dentistry have in common?
When we take care of our mitochondria, we will live a long and healthy life. As we age, our mitochondrial function declines, and a specific group of people suffers from mitochondrial dysfunction. Mitochondrial health is holistic health. Did you know you not only have mitochondria in all of our tissue but systemic, free-floating mitochondria within your blood, that additionally increases systemic effects?
Many of the benefits of PBM are prominent topics in dentistry that need addressing. The most notable scientific benefits are:
- Pain management -> increased circulation
- Dealing with chronic inflammation -> increased blood flow to damaged tissue.
- Higher (Micro)circulation -> leads to faster wound repair in burns, injuries.
- Skin health -> more fibroblasts, and collagen is produced in the dermis.
- Balanced Hormonal health -> melatonin regulation is optimized for better sleep; higher testosterone levels because the Leydig cells are active.
- Hair growth -> weak cells absorb light, and hair growth follicle is activated.
- Better cellular health -> because of higher ATP status, cells can work more efficiently.
- Faster muscle recovery -> more heat proteins are created that protect cells from cell death. Additionally, more antioxidants are produced, and less muscle fatigue is experienced.
Recent research shows interesting findings for the wavelength spectrum between Red and Near-Infrared in the field of Dentistry. The wavelengths of:
Red 610 nm
Deep red 665 nm to 695 nm and 745 nm to 775 nm
Infrared 800 nm to 835 nm have lots of potential in the Dental field.
Dr. Rosanna Cavalletto
A few of the examples are:
In the field of orthodontics
During orthodontic dental decrowing, recent research published in 2020 confirmed that PBM could be used to enhance its efficiency. 8
A study in vitro and in vivo has shown that red and near-infrared regions of the spectrum, representing the most effective ranges of irradiation dose, influence the rate of the orthodontic movement. 8
It is most significant due to its penetration into the living tissues to induce cell proliferation and differentiation without overheating the tissues. 8
Diving deep into the cellular world, while its use provokes an increased metabolic activity, accelerates cellular turnover (osteoclast, osteoblast fibroblasts). Also, the production of cytokines involved in the Bone remodeling. 8
In Oral Surgery
As another Dental Treatment, using the range of Infrared 830 nm wavelength, in 8 treatment sessions, and at 48-hour intervals, Photbiomodulation can shorten the retention period. Mineralization may be increased by using Photobiomodulation during mandibular distraction osteogenesis surgical procedures. 9
In the field of Operative Dentistry
As a treatment for dentin hypersensitivity, with a range of 660 nm per tooth, PBM can be used effectively without detrimental pulpal effect, providing decreased dental sensitivity discomfort. 10
As a treatment for muscles orofacial pain
At a 2mm distance and 670nm deep red light. 11
Supporting Wellbeing
Incorporating the use of Luminousred in a green dental clinic provides other benefits that allow the space to be adequately designed for Well-being purposes. For example, for:
Healing Mercury Poisoning with Infrared
A Biological Dentist will always look inside a patient’s mouth to detect the presence of amalgam fillings.
When having such restorations in the mouth, it is suggested to test the patient immediately for mercury poisoning. If mercury levels in the body while test results are high, it is necessary to follow the required protocol.
As part of the protocol, implementing a photobiomodulation device in the Dental Clinic will allow the patient to detoxify its body from mercury poisoning. The Luminousred technology, because of its versatility, permits the proper position for the full body.
For aesthetics purposes
Face and Mouth work in conjunction. When a patient attends consultation due to improving his smile, the patient will end by reducing wrinkles and have the skin tightened in a big average. They want to look beautiful! And it is part of a complete dental clinic service to incorporate aesthetics solutions. We know Photobiomodulation works pretty well. If you would like to learn more, do not forget the research website in https://luminousred.com/research/.
But, more pops up as we go, and we are astonished by how much something as easy as shining a light onto your body can help with overall health and longevity. Light management has such an essential correlation to health that everyone should take seriously – not just dental patients. This blog is simply one niche example.
Use cases for red light therapy in a dental context?
Joint and muscle pain:
The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is the joint that connects the lower jaw to the skull 12 and allows the jaw to open and close, enabling 13 you to speak and eat.
Clinical research worldwide has shown that red light therapy has a significant positive effect on arthritis, joint pain, and related symptoms like decreased mobility.
Recommended set-up:
targeted coverage (affected joints)
near-infrared light turned on (850nm)
a treatment time of 15 minutes
at a distance of 5 inches 14
Headaches/migraines:
Usually, headaches associated with dental problems are tension headaches, says Jamison R. Spencer, DMD, MS, an expert in dental sleep medicine. These headaches are caused by muscle strain that builds up in the mouth and jaw.15
A migraine is different than headaches and is identified as a recurrent, throbbing headache. In addition to pain behind the eyes or ears, migraines can cause nausea and vomiting, vision problems, and sensitivity to sounds and lights. 16
A study tested patients with chronic headaches. The research team applied an 830-nm near-infrared laser to the aching points. Results show a 64% reduction in pain scores!
Recommended set-up:
targeted coverage (forehead)
NIR light turned on (850nm)
a treatment time of 7 minutes
at a distance of 2 inches (or 5cm)
Chronic inflammation:
Billions of people worldwide suffer from inflammation, especially chronic inflammation, which attributes them over a long period of their lives.
Most of the time, they get treated with NSAIDs (or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs). Inflammation is your body’s response to danger. It’s one of your immune system’s first actions against infection, germs, irritation, and cell damage. Inflammation can occur through physical (injuries, wounds, bruises, burns), biological (infection, germs, stress), chemical (toxins, alcohol), or environmental (poor sleep, nutrition, dehydration) causes.
Natural red and NIR light therapy treats inflammation naturally by increasing blood flow to the damaged tissues and increasing the body’s antioxidant defense. 18
Detoxification:
The effects of mercury-laden fillings are tremendous. These filings are one of the top contributing causes of mercury poisoning and can cause a wide range of problems, including tremors, insomnia, headaches, nerve damage, kidney problems, and respiratory failure. 20
Now there are two angles you can enter to tackle detoxification:
1. An active lymphatic system further helps “detoxifying” the body (targeted through red light), as its main objective is to help regulate the balance of all fluids in your body. It’s the lymph system’s job to pick up and dispose of cellular “trash” like white blood cells, bacteria, viruses, toxins, and other molecular debris from every tissue in your body.
2. The best natural detox is through good circulation (targeted through NIR light). It is crucial to have proper blood circulation while detoxing. The better your blood flow, the faster you may start to feel better.
Recommended setup:
target your whole body
red + NIR light turned on (660 + 850nm)
a treatment time of 10 minutes
at a distance of 15 inches 21
Relaxation
Chronic mild stress can impair learning and memory. This study, done with mice, has found that treatment with transcranial Photobiomodulation, methylene blue, and their combination reversed these impairments. Results show that cortisol levels (among other chemicals) significantly decreased while antioxidant capacity increased dramatically with the treated mice.
Recommended set-up:
targeted coverage (forehead)
near-infrared light turned on (850nm)
a treatment time of 5 minutes
at a distance of 8 inches (or 20 cm)
Collagen production:
More and more dental clinics also offer beauty treatments such as hyaluronic acid or even botox. We see an emerging field here, as a beautiful smile goes hand in hand with today’s beauty standard.
Plump, blush, and radiant skin is what we all crave, and I can speak from personal experience in saying this routine has changed my life forever. This routine is a quick and easy one, which I do in the mornings after washing my face and applying hydration/make-up. Daily sessions are a MUST, as consistency will get you those results.
Recommended set-up:
targeted coverage (face)
red light turned on (660nm)
a treatment time of 10 minutes
at a distance of 4 inches (or 10 cm)
What is being used today?
Currently, the usage of Photobiomodulation in dentistry is minimal. There are products in this area, like the ATP38, that use a light-color therapy approach with various colors of for and allow for a limited usage of red and near-infrared wavelengths we are looking at in the context of Photobiomodulation.
All our devices emit red and near-infrared light only. Those two wavelengths are the most studied and understood in today’s research community. As already mentioned, blue, green, or yellow has proposed benefits. Blue light boosts alertness, it has antimicrobial potential 32, it helps memory and cognitive function, and elevates mood. It regulates circadian rhythm – the body’s natural wake and sleep cycle. 28. Green light boosts the production of serotonin, for example 29, And, yellow light can increase wound healing, collagen induction, skin hydration, and the overall health of the skin 30. The Amber spectrum (580nm to 600nm). is commonly related to inflammatory response control for a post-operatory oral surgical treatment. 27
As with Photobiomodulation and this dentistry approach, we want to generate systemic effects throughout the full body. A light application that is not just limited to the face if desired. 24
Why applying PBM supports environmental health?
There are various technical specifications and usage opportunities with Luminousred devices.
Firstly, all our devices have a higher number of dual LEDs built-in. Starting with the Model1, with 120, and going up to 960 dual LEDs with the Model2+2 Duo – we give you more opportunities to use the right kind of light. More LEDs allow for a more efficient treatment (in less time and a broader treatment area) and distribute the light in a much more uniform or natural way.
Secondly, all electronic light devices create effects: EMF and light flicker. In our case, we want to watch the EMF and flicker output. EMF stands for electromagnetic field and occurs by electrons flowing through a circuit. Flicker is created when an electrical device’s power grid runs on “alternating current” (AC). AC typically occurs at 50 Hz or 60 Hz. Hertz is the number of cycles a current alternates per second. Both of these effects can be harmful to our system, which we want to prevent.
With Photobiomodulation, we want to get as close to nature as possible, mimicking parts of light from the sun and leave adverse effects out. While we cannot prevent them from happening altogether, we can use higher quality parts in building electronic devices on the one hand and watch what tools we’re using in our daily lives secondly. We did not find closer information on EMF or flicker with the ATP38 but can assure that all our devices emit 0 EMF (at 6 inches of distance) and are anti-flicker due to higher quality drivers.
If you want to read more about flicker or EMF, visit our research page or follow the links below 31,32.
Third our sizing options. All our devices are stackable like LEGOs, giving dental clinics the opportunity to both do targeted treatments at the jaw/head and full-body treatments in a separate recovery room. Talking about holistic health, it all starts in the mouth, and if inpatients can get their treatments done in house directly and come back, it’s a win-win for all parties included. Our devices can also be used in conjunction with the ATP38, without having to make significant changes in the clinics participating.
Last but not least, our devices are highly fair-priced. Our devices start at $449 and go up to $2248 maximum. If you compare this to our competitors in the field – and considering the higher quality components – we are 40-50% under their price tag. Additionally, you get excellent customer service, 1:1 guidance from the founders, access to resources such as a VIP page and research page.
What are the benefits of Luminousred in regards to environmental health?
What is a carbon footprint?
A carbon footprint is a measure of the impact your activities have on the amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) produced through the burning of fossil fuels and is expressed as a weight of CO2 emissions produced in tonnes. To reduce our carbon footprint, we can consciously choose how to use transportation, food, water use, energy use and waste management.
Why is it crucial to consider the carbon footprint in dental treatments?
- The use of Photobiomodulation allows for less treatment time. We are reducing the total number of appointments/procedures and the actual chair-time.
- Less energy and water waste will occur (in the case this is used as a replacement for a conventional procedure), patients, doctor, and employees traveling.
- O2 emissions are reduced, and costs are reduced, personally and for companies in general.
- Home applications and services can improve your productivity and organization and increase your digital collaboration with your colleagues without printing on paper, for example.
- Discussing interdisciplinary cases via Zoom will also be more comfortable for the environment. 30
